Sarasponda was originally found in America although it is of Dutch origin. It is a song that mothers would sing young girls while they were learning to spin thread. The song is onomatopoeic and “Sarasponda” represents the sound of the wheel spinning and “ret set set” is the pedal brake slowing it down.
Performance: This song can be sung while playing a partnered clapping game or playing claves. An example of a clave playing pattern can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcKrbWfk98g If the class level or materials available doesn’t allow the performance to be done with claves, the same pattern can be used when clapping hands and instead of passing the claves students can spin around and high-five again.
Sarasponda might also be performed in an outer and inner circle that face each other and rotate each time the song starts over so students rotate partners. The song may also increase tempo each repetition or the teacher can work with students to create ostinatos to be performed with it.
